4 Things This Table Does Not Tell You

Kohli averages 58.72, but has no century
Kohli’s 58.72 average for the T20 World Cup has been unbecoming that much to his own shine. All other batter who have played more than 40 games have at least one hundred, but Kohli doesn’t have it. He is able to count to 50, 70 and 89 regularly, but does not count to 100. He frequently finishes his innings when the ball has gone “off” or the wickets are down. His most memorable performance came against Pakistan in 2022, where he scored 89 runs. He is great because of his fifties, not his centuries.

Kohli vs Rohit match impact gap
Rohit appeared in 47 matches and Kohli in 35 matches but Rohit could not score 72 less runs than Kohli. Kohli has (1292) runs against Rohit’s (1220) in the T20 World Cup history in Most Runs in T20 World Cup History. The average of Kohli is 58.72 and Rohit is 35.00. Kohli has averaged 37 points per match while Rohit has averaged 26 points per match. Same teams and conditions but Kohli is consistently more impactful demonstrating an average difference of 11 runs per match over his career.

Gayle boom-or-bust T20 record
Gayle is ranked 10th in Most Average runs per innings in the world in T20 World Cup with a 28.25 average but has 2 centuries, the most in the format. All players above him have either 0 or 1 hundred. He is extreme; he reaches 100 when he is set, he falls cheaply when he reaches 100, even ducks. No medium of consistency. Whereas Kohli has been consistent in the 50-80 range, Gayle’s batting is far more of a roller coaster, with some big knockers and some quick dismissals.

Warner consistent starts, low conversion
Warner got 984 runs in 41 T20 World Cups matches and his average is 27.33. Although he had more 80s in his 800-plus games for Australia, he never reached the 100 boundary. His best possible score is 74. His World Cup performance was lacking in comparison to his impressive IPL track. He seemed to produce a lot of starts, but not always big ones and his stats at the highest level were erratic.

Kohli’s 319 runs for the 2014 edition of the T20 World Cup were made at an average of 106.33, the best in a single T20 World Cup edition. He was 6 matches for 3 not outs with them in pressure matches – not dead rubbers, mind you.

Sahibzada Farhan has set a new record with 383 runs in 8 matches for Pakistan in 2024, who were eliminated at the group stage. His runs included all the possible games before his elimination, including impressive knocks in a non-qualifying season.

India has got the sole nation to have two players who have scored above 1000 runs in T20 World Cup. Kohli at 1,292 and Rohit at 1,220. They are trailed by England who are second with Buttler at 1,066. It is the highest number of 600 runs achieved by any other England batter. It seems that the gap between the top two and England’s top two is indicative of the extent to which India added to most runs in T20 World Cup history.

Will Kohli’s Record of Most Runs in T20 World Cup History Ever Be Beaten?

Once the World Cup 2024 is completed, Kohli will neither be able to play in the shorter format. He has scored 1,292 runs in most runs in T20 World Cup history which will stay as such.

The only threat to being serious is Jos Buttler at 1,066. He is 227 runs down and with an average of 200 – 250 runs per World Cup, the gap may be filled in within few editions.

Buttler will most likely be a part of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Putting 230+ in that edition will give him the chance to beat most runs in T20 World Cup history record. It is not a certainty, but achievable with form and England’s form.

Rohit has also been stripped of his T20Is duty and his 1,220 runs are now set in stone. Next in the line of Indian players who can break both records is Suryakumar Yadav. He is in his early 30s with some 600 runs in the T20 World Cups and a good 2–3 strong edition may turn it into a serious race.

Kohli’s record stands at least until IPL 2026, and its future depends on Buttler and the next cycle of the most runs in T20 World Cup history leaderboard.
