Highest Team Totals in IPL History
Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 287 for 3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 15, 2024. That is the highest team total in IPL history and the highest total in T20 franchise cricket anywhere in the world.
They also have the 2nd highest total. And the fourth. Then they were in a position to tie the record IPL 2025 game after they reached a score of 286 for 6 in the match against Rajasthan Royals.
Ten of the top 11 scoring innings in the history of IPL have been either of IPL 2024 or IPL 2025. It is a record 11-year high for the RCB with 263 runs in 2013. It is now the 11th highest total ever. Something changed in 2024. This article provides an explanation of what.

4 Things This Table Does Not Tell You
SRH’s 287 is the highest total in all of T20 franchise cricket globally. Not just IPL. Every league. Every country.
There have been many cricket matches in these four major competitions that haven’t mustered a total score exceeding 280 runs.Runners up have been scarce in the Big Bash, The Hundred, Caribbean Premier League and SA20. SRH’s IPL 2024 score of 287 against any T20 team is the highest tallies ever achieved. It was due to a particular mix of flat pitch, Chinnaswamy’s short clearances and with impact player rule putting the batters in a line-up and three of them hitting their form. Travis Head scored 102. Klaasen scored 67. Abdul Samad bowled 10 balls and picked up 37 runs each. All three hit on the double digit of more than 200.
RCB’s 263 from 2013 held the record for 11 years. It was broken 6 times in 12 months.
No team has ever made a score over 263 in the history of IPL from 2013-2023. That was achieved 5 times in IPL 2024. It was outdone once again in the upcoming IPL 2025. The scoring rate in the 2024 and 2025 IPL is not a blistering run, it is a change in the whole game of T20 cricket. In 2023, the “Impact Player” rule was implemented which enabled a team to field an additional specialist batsman without any bowling penalty. The one rule change is the biggest contributor to the team totals.
KKR scored 261 in match 8 and still lost. PBKS chased 262 in the same season to beat them. The highest successful chase in IPL history came two months after the highest team total.
KKR posted 261 for 6 against Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens in IPL 2024. Punjab Kings chased 262 for 2, winning with 8 wickets and 2 overs to spare. That is the highest successful run chase in IPL history. It happened in the same season as the highest team total ever. IPL 2024 did not just rewrite batting records. It rewrote what chasing teams could do with flat pitches and an extra specialist batter in the lineup.
SRH came within one run of breaking their own record in IPL 2025. They scored 286 chasing 287.
In their IPL 2025 opener, SRH were set a target of 287 by themselves as context for what their batting could do. They scored 286 for 6. One run short of the record they already held. Ishan Kishan scored 106 off 47 balls. Travis Head scored 67 off 31 balls. They still could not match what they did at Chinnaswamy in 2024. The record is not just high. It is harder to reach than even SRH themselves can manage on most days.
The SRH Batting Revolution: What Changed in 2024
| Factor | Before 2024 | 2024 Onwards |
|---|---|---|
| Impact Player rule | Not available | Extra specialist batter added |
| Travis Head | Not in IPL | Opens for SRH, SR 170+ |
| Heinrich Klaasen | Moderate role | Finisher, SR 160+ in death |
| Abhishek Sharma | Developing | Opener, three 50+ scores in 2024 |
| Average first innings score | Around 165 | Around 185 in 2024-25 |
| 200+ scores per season | 8 to 12 typically | 52 in IPL 2025 alone |
52 scores of 200 or more in IPL 2025. The previous record was 38. IPL 2008 saw teams only cross 200 times throughout the season. Vitamins of T20 have made 200 runs impossible to look down upon as a feat, as the flat pitches and the Impact Player rule made it easy for the players that hit the 200s to surpass this mark. It was used as a base for a competitive total.
Highest Totals by Venue
| Venue | Highest Total | Team | Year | Why Scores Are High Here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chinnaswamy, Bengaluru | 287/3 | SRH | 2024 | Short boundaries, flat pitch, high altitude |
| Rajiv Gandhi, Hyderabad | 286/6 | SRH | 2025 | Flat pitch, SRH home advantage |
| Eden Gardens, Kolkata | 261/6 | KKR | 2024 | Large ground but flat surface |
| Arun Jaitley, Delhi | 272/7 | KKR | 2024 | Small boundaries, batting-friendly |
| Mullanpur, Chandigarh | 263/3 | PBKS | 2024 | New venue, flat and quick outfield |
| Wankhede, Mumbai | 235/1 | MI | 2023 | Coastal conditions, pace-friendly |
Chinnaswamy has set 4 of the top 15 highest totals in the history of IPL. The ground level is 920m asl. The air is thinner. The ball continues to travel. At Chinnaswamy, boundaries which are caught 5, metres at sea level are also caught. All teams which have played there are aware of the fact that a large total can be achieved. Not all teams can capitalize on it. SRH in 2024 did.
Will 300 Ever Be Scored in IPL?
SRH scored 286 in their IPL 2025 opener and 278 later in the same season. They are the team most likely to score 300 first.
The 300 barrier requires 15 runs per over across 20 overs. In IPL 2024, SRH scored at 17.1 runs per over across their 287 innings. They already have the run rate. They just need the wickets to stay up.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is the most likely venue. Short boundaries, fast outfield, high altitude, and flat pitch combine to give batters every advantage. SRH play there every season. If the conditions align the way they did in May 2024, the 300 barrier gets broken.
The truth of the matter is, 300 is what is scored by the batsman prior to 2028 in IPL. Only one question is left: Who does it first, and whether it is the time to bat or to bowl for SRH.
