Fastest Fifty in IPL History
On May 11, 2023, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored the fastest fifty in IPL history, hitting 50 off just 13 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens while playing for Rajasthan Royals.
He struck 26 off the first over by himself. This was given the new ball by KKR captain Nitish Rana. It was four balls to that decision.
At the age of 21, Jaiswal had just under 80 more runs to complete with 17 overs to go, and RR required. The pursuit was almost finished before it had commenced. The record was made during an Indian Premier League match where there was hardly any pressure needed to win. When reading this list, that context is more important than most people might think Your IPL News.

4 Things This Table Does Not Tell You
Three of the top 10 fastest fifties came in matches the batter’s team lost. Speed did not equal victory.
Fraser-McGurk’s first 15-ball fifty came chasing 267 against SRH. DC finished on 199 and lost by 67 runs. Raina’s 16-ball 87 came in a knockout match CSK lost. A fast fifty sets a record but it does not always save a match. This list includes some of the most explosive innings in IPL history that ended in defeat. The records and the results are two separate things.
Cummins is a pace bowler. A 14 ball fifty against Jasprit Bumrah batting at #6.
The fact that Cummins came in at #6 in a chase for KKR at Pune in 2022 against MI and was at 83 for 4 after 12 overs, in a chase of 162 and hammered Daniel Sams for 6, 4, 6, 6 in an over, against Bumrah for a 6, a 4 in another over, is significant. Pace bowler, #6, against arguably the best death bowler in IPL history in 14 balls is the context everyone else misses.
Fraser-McGurk is also the only player to have two 15-ball fifties in the same IPL season.
In IPL 2024, he did it during two consecutive weeks. April 20 against SRH. April 27 against MI. Seven days apart. His third and fourth IPL matches, two 15 ball fifties. None of the other batters in the history of the tournament was capable of the feat in two seasons. It was his first season.
Raina’s 87 off 25 balls in the 2014 qualifier is not just the 10th fastest fifty. It may be the greatest IPL innings in a losing cause.
CSK needed to win that match to reach the final. Raina came in and hit 87 off 25 balls. CSK still lost. His innings included the highest ever powerplay score in IPL history at that point. The team scored 79 in 6 overs. They fell short chasing because the total was already 226. Raina produced one of the fastest innings in IPL history. It was not enough. That is the cruelty of the knockout format.
The Match Pressure Index: Which Fifties Actually Mattered
| Batter | Balls | Chase/Set | Required Rate at Entry | Match Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yashasvi Jaiswal | 13 | Chase 159 | Low pressure | Won easily |
| Nicholas Pooran | 15 | Chase 213 | 114 off 56 balls | Won by 1 wkt |
| Pat Cummins | 14 | Chase 162 | 79 off 48 balls | Won by 5 wkts |
| Romario Shepherd | 14 | Set total | RCB 159/5 off 18 | Won by 43 runs |
| Jake Fraser-McGurk | 15 | Chase 267 | Very high pressure | Lost by 67 runs |
| Suresh Raina | 16 | Chase 226 | Extreme pressure | Lost by 73 runs |
Pooran’s 15 ball fifty, one of the fastest fifty in IPL history, under the highest pressure context of the table above cannot go unmentioned. 114 needed off 56 balls when he walked out. That’s a run a ball requirement of 12.2 RPO. His fifty came off 15 balls and LSG won by a solitary wicket on the last ball. Taking context into consideration, it makes for the most match winning inning in this entire list.
Fastest Fifties by Indians in IPL History
| No. | Batter | Balls | Year | Match |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yashasvi Jaiswal | 13 | 2023 | RR vs KKR |
| 2 | KL Rahul | 14 | 2018 | KXIP vs CSK |
| 3 | Yusuf Pathan | 15 | 2010 | RR vs MI |
| 4 | Vaibhav Sooryavanshi | 15 | 2025 | RR vs CSK |
| 5 | Suresh Raina | 16 | 2014 | CSK vs KXIP |
Some of the fastest fifty in IPL history belong to Indian players. Jaiswal’s 13-ball fifty is the fastest by an Indian batter in any format of T20 cricket at the highest level. That is not just an IPL record. It is a record across all T20 leagues and international matches combined.
Will 13 Balls Ever Be Beaten?
Batter need 50 of 12 balls to overcome Jaiswal’s fastest fifty in IPL history. That means the batter must hit 12 out of 12 balls, and should hit 10 boundaries at least.
Has been seen once in T20 history. Yuvraj Singh was the man, scoring 6 sixes in one over of Stuart Broad at T20 world cup 2007, 50 in 12 balls but it was in one occasion, at one particular bowler, at one particular day.
In IPL conditions, with field restrictions in the first six overs, 12 balls to fifty is possible. It requires the right match situation, the right opposition bowling attack, and the right pitch. Jaiswal needed the stars to align in 2023. Someone else will need all of them to align again.
The record survives through IPL 2026. After that, with batters like Vaibhav Suryavanshi now in the IPL system, the conversation around the fastest fifty in IPL history could change entirely.
